In 1979 David Humphries was commissioned to design the outdoor decorations for Melbourne's 25 th Moomba Festival.

After art school in Sydney he painted, created happenings, directed festivals, went to London to complete a post - graduate diploma in Arts Administration, focused his studies on festivals and public art. traveled to every festival in the world he could find, and by 30 was freelancing  back in OZ"

His Gateway Neon Arch with its flashing lights zipping and pulsating above the parade celebrates the festival spirit and has become the icon of Melbourne's Moomba ,
The Arch received the 1979 National Outdoor Advertising Association Award.
