Netherlands Australian Memorial Canberra ACT Memorial design: Adam Azzopardi -National Capital Authority
In situ Terrazzo artwork David Humphries Project managers: Lend Lease Commissioned by the National Capital Authority 1999
The Royal Netherlands and East Indies Forces Memorial commemorates Dutch forces who operated from Australia as part of the
allied opposition to Japan during World War Two. It is located in the Defence Complex in Canberra, near the Australian American War Memorial with its well known eagle atop a tall column. This special position
symbolizes the fact that The Netherlands and the USA were the only non -Commonwealth allies to establish bases in Australia during the war.
The terrazzo design is based on aerial map of the former Dutch East Indies region's relationship to Australia over
shadowed by the heavy clouds of war.
