We work closely with the client to integrate the
visual images with the goals of the project. David Humphries is the hands-on director of PUBLIC ART SQUAD P/L, a company that has completed some of Australia's most memorable large-scale public and commercial
commissions. Colossal murals, sculptures and marble / terrazzo installations make up his design portfolio.
David Humphries works internationally with architects, interior designers, communities, developers and multinationals who
recognize his expertise in orchestrating large scale art projects for modern buildings and their surrounds.
"Involving artists is not about patronising the arts, it's about management and perceiving that there are people in the
community who can do things much more skilled and beautiful than going through the traditional building industry channels." Architect, Robert Perry.
Public Art Squad Pty. Ltd. and its director David Humphries provide a unique and pioneering service in Australia. They create
site-specific original, durable artwork aimed at adding cultural and capital value, putting visual images to work in public places.
Public Art Squad can be seen as fulfilling another essential role, that of a public art advisory as they work closely and
collaboratively with architects, designers, planners and developers on large-scale art projects. They specialise in the integration of art, craft and decoration with modern architecture and urban design.
A notable example of this was David Humphries brief as Artistic Director on Skygarden in Sydney CBD, and Harbourside
Festival Market Place, Darling Harbour, both multi-million dollar retail and office developments by Merlin International. Both projects provided spectacular examples of how David Humphries' considerable skills as
an artist and trouble shooter enabled him to create a positive dialogue among artists, developers, architects and interior designers.
Enjoying the challenge of working with other international art professionals, many of them at the cutting edge of art design
and ‘art in architecture developments, Humphries collaborates with architects, artists, designers and craftspeople.
At the Public Art Squad warehouse studio in Rosebery, they work with him as he plans and develops his commissions. Relevant,
contemporary and innovative, Humphries explores and extends the beauty of his clients' environments.
Over the years, Public Art Squad has cultivated a mature understanding of visual resource, social dynamics and how people
respond to their environments with respect to art. Identifying the recurring and changing symbols, images and ideas which motivate the Australian people, PAS has developed a widely appealing visual approach, using
realistic imagery with bold colours and patterns, often with a strong positive narrative spirit.
Public Art Squad has earned recognition and congratulations for their achievements in bringing the joys of art to the people
at large and for exploring new frontiers in art practice. The success of Public Art Squad augurs well for the future of the visual arts in Australia.
